San José Island

The Las Perlas Archipelago is a group of 200 islands located about 48 kilometers (30 miles) from Panama City. The largest island is Isla del Rey, followed by San José Island, with an area of 44 km². This island is home to the elegant Hacienda del Mar resort.

A 20-minute charter flight from Panama City takes you to San José Island, where you can enjoy your very own private beach. The island was originally used as a training camp for U.S. soldiers in the 1940s, who built its infrastructure, including the airstrip and 52 kilometers of roads. It later belonged to Earl Tupper, the inventor of Tupperware, and was then purchased by Panamanian investors.

This small eco-resort is the only lodging option on the island. It has 17 cottages built among the trees, with beautiful views of the beach and the Pacific Ocean. Despite its isolation, the resort offers all modern amenities, such as air conditioning, hot water and internet. A beautiful infinity pool offers the best view, next to the clubhouse and the restaurant. The food is delicious, with a menu featuring seafood such as lobster, crab and fish.

Hacienda del Mar Resort is a founding member of the Las Perlas Sustainable Tourism Chamber, created to preserve the ecological balance of the islands. Thanks to this conservation program, thousands of sea turtles come to nest and hatch every year. With some luck, visitors may see them from the infinity pool.

Humpback whales put on a show visible from the beach, and boat trips can also be arranged to see them up close. An estimated 2,000 to 2,500 whales migrate from the Southern Hemisphere to the warmer waters of the Las Perlas Archipelago during these months, escaping the winter to mate and give birth to their calves.

Fishing

The fishing here is so good that every year it hosts the "Copa George F. Novey Jr." tournament, which holds 16 black marlin records. Just 200 meters from Hacienda del Mar Resort is "Las Tres Pilas de Arroz", a spot teeming with fish where anglers can catch all kinds of prized species.

Snorkeling

The Pacific waters have excellent visibility near the coast. Rock formations are the best spots for colorful fish, and you may also see moray eels, barracudas, manta rays and sea turtles.

Kayak

One of the best ways to explore the island is by kayak. You can paddle into rivers and mangroves, or simply follow the coast exploring each beach. The mangroves are home to many bird species.

Jungle tours

San José Island has lush vegetation thanks to its many water sources, including waterfalls up to 60 feet high. Its rivers and springs supply fresh water to the island and support its rich biodiversity. Hacienda del Mar Resort organizes daytime tours and night safaris around the island. Trees up to 80 feet tall create postcard-worthy scenery. Several plant species discovered on the island were named after World War II commanders, such as General Bullone, Colonel Thompson and Major Campbell.
